What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® is produced by the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum, type A (BTX-A), which is combined with sodium chloride, and Albumin Human (a plasma protein). The toxin works to prevent the targeted muscles from contracting, forming wrinkles.
BOTOX® Cosmetic works by preventing the muscles that have formed the wrinkle to contract, relaxing the area and eliminating the deep lines.
How long has BOTOX® Cosmetic been used in Canada?
BOTOX® Cosmetic was approved by Health Canada in 2001 to treat glabellar lines.
How do I find a good doctor to administer BOTOX® injections?
The right Doctor for you should be a physician who is a member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). The Doctor should work out of modern and clean facilities, have good knowledge of facial anatomy, and be someone you feel absolutely comfortable with and can trust. They should also be licensed to administer BOTOX® in Toronto.
Who can receive BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections?
Adults who are unhappy with the appearance of glabellar lines, and are in relatively good health.
How long does one treatment take?
One BOTOX® injection procedure at the Vivian Medical Spa takes approximately 15 minutes, depending on the patient and the severity of the wrinkles.
When will I be able to see the results of an injection with BOTOX®?
You'll see the results within a few days. The more severe the wrinkle, the more improvement you'll notice.
After a BOTOX® Cosmetic injection, results normally last for up to 4 months. However, this depends on the individual. Speak with your Botox Doctor for more details. These results are not permanent and will disappear in a few months if you discontinue use of BOTOX®.
After the BOTOX® procedure, can I go home?
Yes! As soon as you cosmetic surgeon has completed the procedure at the Spa, you can go home, or even go back to work. There are noticeable marks on your face and you will feel absolutely fine.
What are some common side effects?
A common side effect from BOTOX® Cosmetic is droopy eyelids, but this will gradually disappear.
How often can I get BOTOX® Injections?
Patients can receive subsequent treatments with a minimum of 3 months between each visit
How much will it cost?
We offer a very low price on BOTOX® at Vivian Medical Spa. The amount of BOTOX® needed will be decided by you and the Doctor based on your wrinkles and desired results.
History of Botox in Canada:
Although relatively new to the North American public, BOTOX® has actually been around for quite a long time as a trusted therapeutic procedure for non-cosmetic use in the treatment of ophthalmic disorders.
The Canadian government, in a decision made over a decade ago, approved BOTOX® (Botulinum toxin type A) to treat overactive muscles resulting from such disorders as in the misalignment of the eyes and eyelid contractions. More recently, approval was extended to treat other conditions involving hyperactive muscles, such as cerebral palsy in children. Patients undergoing treatment with BOTOX® are able to resume normal, everyday activity without the inhibiting effects of their disorder, with very temporary and reversible minimal side effects.
As one of the many physicians who have explored the wrinkle-smoothing properties of BOTOX® in medical advances, a Canadian ophthalmologist noted its ability to eliminate or minimize wrinkles around her patients' eyes while treating their ophthalmic conditions. These wrinkles and frown lines that appear from repeated muscular contractions, such as squinting and frowning, are called "dynamic wrinkles".
Another decade of research and testing was done, and the Canadian government cleared BOTOX® in April 2001 to treat patients with frown (glabellar) lines between the eyebrows. It is now one of the most popular type of cosmetic procedure used by hundreds of thousands men and women around the world.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. BOTOX® is a purified protein that is derived from bacteria, but when used properly in extremely small amounts, it does not spread throughout the body. A BOTOX® injection treatment targets dynamic wrinkles by relaxing the overactive muscles underneath. Therefore, BOTOX® does not freeze the face. It is safer than many surgical cosmetic procedures.
In an initial consultation for BOTOX® Cosmetic with a Cosmetic Doctor or patient consultant at Vivian Medical Spa, patients will be assessed for their compatibility with the pharmaceutical. Though there may be fewer restrictions when compared to other cosmetic procedures, BOTOX® Cosmetic is not recommended for the following individuals:
Women who are pregnant should not be treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Women who are nursing should avoid undergoing BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, as there may be a risk of passing the drug through breast milk.
Research is inconclusive on the relationship between BOTOX® Cosmetic injections and cardiovascular disease.
Those with a neuromuscular disease, such as Lambert-Eaton myasthenia syndrome, should not receive treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic. Doing so can cause serious damage to muscles and worsen the state of the disease.
During consultation with the Doctor, it is recommended that patients find out about the ingredients in the BOTOX® Cosmetic drug. If you are allergic to any ingredient in the drug, do not undergo treatment. This is extremely rare.
Risks of adverse side effects will increase for those patients who have an inflammation of the skin or muscular atrophy in the target area. Extra care will be taken.
For some, receiving a BOTOX® Cosmetic injection may result in becoming immune to the drug. Antibodies may form, reducing its effectiveness. Therefore, it is imperative that patients choose a reputable clinic that is authorized to administer BOTOX®.
With years of medical experience and training, as well as a complete understanding of facial anatomy, Dr. Wojcicki at Vivian Medical Spa has the expertise to administer BOTOX® Cosmetic injections safely and carefully, following the directions specified by the manufacturer of the pharmaceutical, Allergan Inc., the FDA and Health Canada.
As a result, the occurrence of such temporary side effects as droopy eyelids (ptosis) and double vision within the first week following treatment are considered rare, since the placement of the injection and the amount injected (factors that generally contribute to these complications) will be accurate. Weakness in the muscles surrounding the injection area can also result if too much BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected. However, should any adverse reaction occur following injection, whether it be within a day or a couple weeks afterward, please inform us immediately.
